What is this used for:

  • Urinary tract infections, 
  • Acute otitis media in pediatric patients (when clinically indicated), 
  • Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis in adults, 
  • Enteritis caused by susceptible Shigella, 
  • Prophylaxis and treatment of Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia, 
  • Travelers' diarrhea

 

 When to not take this medicine:

  • Hypersensitivity or Allergy towards Sulfamethoxazole or Trimethoprim
  • Liver diseases
  • Kidney disease
  • Patients with a history of drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia 
  • Acute porphyria.
  • Infants during the first 6 weeks of life.

 

How should i take the medicine:

Take this medicine with an adequate amount of water as directed by the physician. Do not take this medicine in small or larger amounts than recommended.

 

How this medicine works:

This medicine works by preventing the bacteria from producing folic acid, a nutrient required for bacterial multiplication.

  • BCG vaccine-Moderate

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicine. When these medicines are taken together it The therapeutic efficacy of BCG vaccine can be decreased. Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.

 

  • Gentamicin-Moderate

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicine. When these medicines are taken together Gentamicin may decrease the excretion rate of this medicine. It may lead to several undesirable effects.  Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.

 

  • Typhoid vaccine-Moderate

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicine. When these medicines are taken together The therapeutic efficacy of Typhoid vaccine can be decreased. Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.

 

  • Cholera vaccine-Moderate

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicine. When these medicines are taken together it decreases the therapeutic efficacy of Cholera vaccine. Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.

 

Alcohol interactions:

Consumption of alcohol is not recommended while receiving this medicine as it may cause interactions and lead to serious adverse effects and may worsen the health condition.

  • Atrophic gastritis has been noted with long-term use of this medicine.
