Eye Donation Procedure in India

Eye Donation Procedure

An estimated 550 million people suffer from eye problems in India every year. One major cause of blindness worldwide is corneal blindness which is a disease that is caused due to infection of the cornea. It is the fourth-largest cause of blindness worldwide. Some of the other causes of blindness are glaucoma, cataracts and age-related problems.

How does your eye get affected? Well, our eyes have a protective outer layer called cornea that protects the iris, anterior chamber and the pupil. It is the main element of the human eye that helps you focus on what you see. If the cornea is infected, you will experience blurry vision.

Facts About Eye Donation

Here are some interesting facts about the eye donation you should know if you’d ever want to donate on in future.

  • Your eyes can be donated only after your death.
  • The human eye must be removed within 4-6 hours after death.
  • Eye removal procedure takes just 20 minutes.
  • Eye removal does not make the body look disfigured.

  • You do not have AIDS, blood cancer, cholera and encephalitis, meningitis, rabies etc.

Eye donation procedure is simple and quick in India, but the process of giving another sight is large. Here are some frequently asked questions that will shed light on the following topic.

    1. Will you or your family get paid for eye donation?

No. Eye donation procedure does not involve the sale of organs in India and is considered illegal under the Transplantation of Human Organ and Tissue Rules 2014.

    1. How soon should a cornea be transplanted?

The cornea is taken from a donor and it must be transplanted within 4 days to an individual in need sight.

    1. Can blind people dream?

No. Blind people cannot see in their dreams because they were born blind and have no understanding of the visual world.

    1. What is night blindness?

It is the inability to see at night or in low light conditions. Medically known as nyctalopia, this eye condition is caused due to eye injury or vitamin D deficiency and from birth.

    1. Which part of the eye can be transplanted?

It is impossible to transplant the entire eye, thus, the cornea is taken from a donor to a recipient for transplant. The cornea is a clear layer that helps you focus on light.

The human eye is a window of what you see, imagine and feel. It is one organ that enables you to dream of a future never seen. Sight allows you to dream, assume and recreate something that you are bound to make a reality of. However, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), 39 million are blind.

Everyone has the Right To Sight and as a result, providing eyesight for those 39 million would be a challenge. Thus, the eye bank collects only the cornea from the donor’s both eyes but provides sight for only one eye of the recipient. By this way, we could lower the rate of blind worldwide and help the blind oversee a better future.
