Exercise and Diabetes, and Heart Disease Risk Reduction in Children

In a first of its kind follow up study to establish the links between childhood inactivity and risk of developing diabetes and heart diseases later in life, researchers from the University of Eastern Finland, the University of Copenhagen, the Norwegian School of Sports Sciences, and the University of Cambridge conducted a follow-up study spanning two years. The conclusions reached by the group of researchers had been path-breaking in its own right. The researchers found that the more physically active a child is i.e. the more rigorous a child’s exercise routine is, the less he or she is at a risk of developing diabetes and/or heart diseases in adulthood. This is to say, that the more physically inactive a child is during his/her childhood, the more he/she is at a risk of developing diabetes, and/or heart diseases. This study is not just a first of its kind follow-up study involving children, it is also the first to establish a direct relationship between childhood habits and the risk pileup which can lead to the development of diabetes or cardiovascular diseases in adulthood.
