Prime Minister Narendra Modi rolled out the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana-Ayushman Bharat Scheme on Sunday. He called it a new and distinct initiative to serve the poor.
It is the biggest government-sponsored healthcare scheme in the world and the count of people benefitting from it is equivalent to the population of Canada, Mexico and the US collectively. Over 10 crore poor and underprivileged families will benefit from it. All pre-existing health conditions will be covered under this scheme from the first day of its implementation. The scheme’s magnitude can be measured from the fact that over 1,300 ailments are covered under it, including heart diseases, kidney ailments, liver disorders and diabetes.
This scheme assures that no person in India will be poor from the point of view of health. Under this scheme, all the needy people will have an insurance of Rs 5 lakh per year, the premium of which will be paid by the government. Getting the insurance premium paid by the government will now be a fundamental right for those who are eligible for the scheme.
It will cover treatment in any government or empanelled private hospitals all over India, apart from pre and post hospitalisation expenses. With the scheme getting executed, empanelled hospitals will no longer have an excuse to refuse treatment to those in need.
Ayushman Bharat scheme is PM’s step to make quality health care available, accessible and affordable for all.
