Different Sleeping Positions and Their Pros and Cons

Energy levels, attention span and ability to concentrate are dependent on many factors and ‘a good night’s sleep’ is one of the most important factors. Sometimes, even after the required number of hours of sleep, one wakes up in pain, discomfort and feeling lethargic. This is mostly due to inappropriate sleeping posture.

Different Sleeping Positions and Their Pros and Cons

Sleep is deeply impacted by the body positioning as it may affect breathing and cause snoring or sleep apnea, worsening pain leading to insomnia.

The Pros and Cons of Different Sleeping Positions

Supine (On your back)

Description: If sleeping on your back is your position of preference, you’re scoring more benefits than you’d know. Supine position keeps your neck, head and spine to rest in an impartial position with no additional weight on those regions, so you’re less likely to experience discomfort.

Left side

Description: When you sleep on your left side, it puts less pressure on your heart and it can easily pump blood throughout your body.

Left Side

Right side

Description: According to a report published in JAMA (Journal of American Medical Association), sleeping on the right side is bad if you have Gastroesophageal reflux disease, as it triggers heartburn and acid reflux.

Right Side

Prone (On your stomach)

Description: Stomach sleepers, we don’t really have a good news for you. We realise you want to slump face down with arms out, yet Doctors state that this is the simplest method to wake up with agony and uneasiness the following morning. Sleeping on the stomach harms the posture of your spine and forces your head to stay in a lock on a 90-degree angle all night long, which ends up putting strain on your neck.

Description: Sleeping with your head raised is possible by dozing in a chair or increasing the number of pillows under the head and upper back. However, when we sleep upright, our neck tends to strain and drop to one side, causing pain.
