“Wherever the art of Medicine is appreciated, there is also an appreciation of Humanity”.

The white coat of dignity and pride holds much more value and importance as it’s said that we can pay the doctor to resolve our troubles but for their kindness, we remain in debt.

On July 1st every year, National Doctor’s Day is celebrated across India to respect the profession of Doctors who selflessly act every day as a caregiver and savior. Every day, they deal with life and death issues and that’s why regarded as second to god on this earth.

National Doctors Day

A doctor should have the union of 3 qualities – novelty, charity, and utility. Their day’s journey may seem hard initially, but their act of perseverance and dedication wins a life at the end. For this reason, in a medical profession, one may never think at the end of the day that they haven’t done anything valuable, because the truth is, they did.

The awe of bringing a life to the world, the honor of being trusted, and the gratitude of helping people with illness, can only be achieved by Doctors, undoubtedly. There are innumerable captions a doctor deserves for their understanding, courage and saving humankind in one or more ways. This day is moreover, a kind of awareness day to let people know about the roles and precious care of doctors.

Why is Doctor’s Day Celebrated?

The National Doctors’ Day is celebrated worldwide to acknowledge the contributions of doctors or physicians to individual lives. This day varies among different countries as it depends on the commemoration used to name the Doctor’s Day. As in India, the day is celebrated to honor the great physician, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy who was also the Chief Minister of West Bengal. In Brazil, it is celebrated on October 18 to mark the birthday of Saint Luke who was also a great doctor, in Cuba the day is celebrated on December 3 to commemorate Carlos Juan Finlay birthday who was also a Cuban scientist and physician and the very first to research and bring out the cause of the Yellow Fever. In the US, it is celebrated on March 30 to on this day, general anesthesia on surgery was first used. Likewise, in Vietnam it’s on 28 February, in Nepal it’s on 4th March and in Iran, the National Doctor’s Day is celebrated on August 1st.

History of National Doctor’s Day:

The tradition of celebrating National Doctor’s day was first started in the US on 30th March. The story behind it is fascinating and worth knowing. It arouses out from the invention of General Anesthesia in the 1840s. In 1841, Dr. Long discovered that under the influence of ‘Ether’ people are oblivious to pain. This enlightened him to a theory that ether can be effectively used in anesthesia. Therefore, on 30th March 1842, Dr. Long was successfully able to remove a cyst (tumor) from the neck of a patient called James Venable after giving him anesthesia. The first successful use of anesthesia was marked on this day.

Ninety-one years later, Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond sparked the idea to set a day to honor doctors and physicians and their tribute to the society. The observance of the day speeded soon and 1958, the US House of Representatives and the United States Senate passed a resolution passed a resolution on 101st United States Congress to recognize Doctor’s day. Later, on 30th October 1990, George H.W.Bush, the president ruling during the time, signed the resolution making 30th March as a designated Doctor’s day.

History of Doctor’s Day in India:

The Doctor’s day in India was recognized in the year 1991 by the Government of India to be celebrated on July 1st every year marking the birthday and death anniversary of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. He was the most renowned physician of India who had contributed greatly to the Indian Medical System. He played an important crucial role in establishing the Infectious Disease Hospital, Indian Institute of Mental Health, and Kolkata’s (West Bengal) very first postgraduate Medical college. To pay an honor and tribute to his incredible participation in the medical field, this day is celebrated.

Legendary physician Dr. Bidhan was born in the year 1882 on July 1st and passes away on the same date in the year 1962. His 80 years of admired service was worth to honor him with Bharat Ratna bestowed in the year 1961 on 4th February. After completing his higher studies from London, he returned to India in 1911 to pursue a career of a physician. He was very close to Mahatma Gandhi and also joined him during the Civil Disobedience Movement. After few years, he was nominated for the position of Chief Minister of West Bengal due to his high expertise and contribution to the world. He accepted the position but never allowed it to come between his medical profession and continued to serve the poor with his medical proficiency.
