Stress is mainly a physical response to growing work pressures, family issues, relationship issues, and career issues. Stress can lead to mental as well as emotional breakdown, which is on the rise these days.


Where do Body Store Stress?

When the stress gets accumulated within a person, it is stored in different parts of the body. These can be called stress containers. There are five areas where body stores fat, which are:


If you feel that you tend to clench teeth more or grind your teeth, you are more likely to store stress in this area. The masseter muscle is the main muscle involved in chewing. It also helps in clenching and grinding movements.

What is the Effect on the Body?

  • Jaw Pain: When the person keeps on clenching or grinding teeth regularly, it leads to jaw pain.
  • Ear Pain: It is a common problem due to stress. There could be sharp and shooting pain or pulse like sound. It can occur in either of the ears or both the ear.
  • Face Changes: There could be deepening of the frowning lines on the forehead.
  • Neck Pain: Chronic clenching or grinding the teeth causes tightness of the neck. This causes forward-headed posture causing pain in the neck muscles. This can lead to cervical spondylosis and cervicogenic headache.
  • Migraines: It is a common problem due to stress, which happens due to the tightness of the neck muscles. This can cause eye pain and half side headache.


Stress is stored in the shoulders. Physical tension and emotional irritability is type of the stress that is stored in the shoulders.

  • There is rounding of the shoulders. This causes tightness of the pectoral muscles and weakening of the shoulder blade muscles. This causes pain in the neck and the shoulder region. The pain can radiate till fingers. There can be numbness and tingling sensation. There could be restricted shoulder movements leading to frozen shoulder in long case.


It usually hurts because stress is stored in the chest. The feeling of heartbreak or sudden demise of the loved ones causes stress. It is mainly relieved by crying. Doctors mistake stress related chest pain with heart problems and unable to relieve the pain by medications.

  • Heart Pain: Person complaints of the chest pain. Heart rate increases. Blood pressure may shoot at times. Doctor relates it to the heart attack. Reports come out to be normal. The person still complains of the pain despite the medications. It concludes to be stress stored in the chest.
  • Chest Tightness: There is a feeling of chest tightness. The breath becomes shallow.
  • Panic Attacks: There may be panic attacks. The person may have anxiety, sweating, and restlessness.


Stress is stored in the stomach. The stomach and intestines are tensed up. It states the feeling of fear.

  • Stomach Upset: There is a decrease in the blood flow and oxygen to the stomach. This leads to cramping and inflammation.
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome: It causes abdominal pain, acidity, heartburn, diarrhea, and constipation.

  • Back Pain: Stress activates sympathetic system causing low back pain. It causes muscle pain, stiffness, and spasms. This leads to immobility. Stress is stored in the iliopsoas muscle.  This causes tightness in the muscle creating pressure in the low back.


1. How to manage stress?

Stress can be managed by various things. These are:

  • Exercises: Practice deep breathing exercise. Inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth by making the lips pursed as if blowing the candle.
  • Diet: Reduce caffeine intake, eat healthy like nuts, spinach, and other green leafy vegetables.
  • Laughter: It is the best medicine to manage stress.
  • Try to hang out with the person who makes you feel happy.

Some kind of trauma can cause numbness. You feel that fingertips and the toe fingertips become numb. Any traumatic event like child abuse or kidnapping can affect you and it becomes impossible to come out of that trauma. It becomes impossible to trust the other person and there is a continuous feeling of fear and stress.


Stress is growing these days due to growing competition, relationship problems, anger, fear, and jealousy. Stress can cause emotional, physical and mental problems. There are many places in the body, which store stress. These are jaw, shoulder, low back, chest, and stomach. If you feel that you clench your teeth more, you are more likely to experience stress. Physical tension and emotional instability can cause stress stored in the shoulders. It affects the upper body posture causing pain in shoulders and neck. Stress is stored in the chest region. It causes heart pain, chest tightness, and high blood pressure. The stomach also stores fat. It causes stomach upset. Low back pain is common when the stress is stored in the low back.

  1. Nice advices given I am male 82 years old. Go daily for a walk at 5 am for 45 minutes n from 6 o’clock to 7.30 am to gym doing all exercise n weight cycling trade mill 10 minutes each weighing 66 kg at present height 160 cm but one problem fat belly recently had sugar fasting test found 131 which is above normal prior to that no sugar problem.
