What is this used for:

When to not take this medicine:

  • Allergic to eplerenone or any ingredients present along with it.
  • High blood levels of potassium, diabetes, gout, or liver or kidney disease.
  • Pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding

 

How should i take the medicine:

Take this medicine with an adequate amount of water as directed by the physician. Do not take this medicine in small or larger amounts than recommended.

 

How this medicine works:

It works by blocking the action of certain chemicals responsible for increasing the blood pressure.

 

Side effects:

  • Swollen face, tongue or throat (less common)
  • Difficulty swallowing (less common)
  • Hives (rare)
  • Difficulties breathing (less common)
  • Elevated potassium level in your blood [symptoms include muscle cramps, diarrhoea, nausea, dizziness or headache] (common)
  • Increased sweating (common)
  • Feeling generally unwell (common)
  • Musculoskeletal pain (rare)
  • Kidney inflammation (rare)
  • Enlargement of breasts in men (rare)

 

Pregnancy warning: Category D

There is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience or studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.


Lactation warning:

 

Use of this medicine is not recommended for lactating and breastfeeding mothers unless absolutely necessary. Inform your doctor about the use of this medicine. All the risks and benefits should be discussed with the doctor before taking this medicine.

 

Renal dose adjustments:

 

Care must be taken for individuals with kidney disease while taking this medicine. Please discuss appropriate dose adjustments with your doctor. Your doctor may also prescribe a suitable alternative on the basis of creatinine clearance values.

 

Hepatic dose adjustments:

 

Care must be taken for individuals with liver disease while taking this medicine. Please discuss appropriate dose adjustments with your doctor. Your doctor may also prescribe a suitable alternative.

 

Drug interactions:

  • Aspirin - Moderate

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicines. When these medicines are taken or used together, may decrease the effects of eplerenone. If you experience any signs and symptoms like signs of high blood pressure which may include headache, blurred vision, trouble concentrating, dizziness then inform the doctor on priority. Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.

 

  • Spironolactone - Moderate

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicines. When these medicines are taken or used together may significantly increase potassium levels in the blood. High levels of potassium can develop into a condition known as hyperkalemia, which in severe cases can lead to kidney failure, muscle paralysis, irregular heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest. If you experience any signs and symptoms like nausea, vomiting, weakness, confusion, tingling of the hands and feet, feelings of heaviness in the legs, a weak pulse, or a slow or irregular heartbeat then inform the doctor on priority. Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.


  • Lisinopril - Moderate

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicines. When these medicines are taken or used together can lead to kidney failure, muscle paralysis, irregular heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest.If you experience any signs and symptoms like nausea, vomiting, weakness, confusion, tingling of the hands and feet, feelings of heaviness in the legs, a weak pulse, or a slow or irregular heartbeat,then inform the doctor on priority. Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.


  • Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) - Unknown

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicines. The use of these medicines are contraindicated since they may give serious adverse reactions which may lead to coma or death. Suitable alternatives may be considered based on the condition of the patient.


  • Acetaminophen - Unknown

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicines. The use of these medicines are contraindicated since they may give serious adverse reactions which may lead to coma or death. Suitable alternatives may be considered based on the condition of the patient.


  • Atazanavir - Major

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicines. When these medicines are taken or used together, may significantly increase the blood levels and effects of eplerenone. This can increase the risk of serious side effects including hyperkalemia (high blood potassium), which in severe cases can lead to kidney failure, muscle paralysis, irregular heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest. If you experience discomfort and uneasiness then inform the doctor on priority. Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.

 

Alcohol interactions:

Consumption of alcohol is not recommended while receiving/taking this medicine as it may cause interactions and lead to serious adverse effects and may worsen the health condition.

Missed dose instructions:

  • This medicinal product does not require any special storage conditions. 
  • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the blister and carton after “EXP”. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month. 
  • Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste.
