What is this used for:

  • Infections of the upper respiratory tract, Infections of lower respiratory tract
  • Infections of urinary tract and prostate
  • Management of inhalational anthrax caused by Bacillus anthracis
  • Treatment and/or prophylaxis of plague caused by Yersinia pestis.

 

When to not take this medicine:

 

  • Hypersensitivity or  Allergy towards Levofloxacin
  • In patients with epilepsy
  • In patients with history of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolone administration,
  • In children or growing adolescents

 

How should i take the medicine:

 

Take this medicine with an adequate amount of water as directed by the physician. Do not take this medicine in small or larger amounts than recommended.

 

How this medicine works:

This medicine prevents the growth of bacterial infections by inhibition of two key bacterial enzymes DNA gyrase and topoisomerase.

 Use of this medicine is not recommended for lactating and breastfeeding mothers unless absolutely necessary. Inform your doctor about the use of this medicine. All the risks and benefits should be discussed with the doctor before taking this medicine.

 

Renal dose adjustments:

 Care must be taken for individuals with kidney disease while taking this medicine. Please discuss appropriate dose adjustments with your doctor. Your doctor may also prescribe a suitable alternative on the basis of creatinine clearance values.

 

Hepatic dose adjustments:

 Care must be taken for individuals with liver disease while taking this medicine. Please discuss appropriate dose adjustments with your doctor. Your doctor may also prescribe a suitable alternative.

 

Drug interactions:

 

  • Prednisone-Major

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicine. Levofloxacin and other medications in its class can cause tendinitis and tendon rupture, and the risk may be increased when combined with a steroid such as prednisone. Older adults over 60 years of age and those who have received a kidney, heart, and/or lung transplant may be particularly susceptible. Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.

 

  • Tramadol-Major

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicine. Tramadol may rarely cause seizures, and combining it with other medications that can also cause seizures such as levofloxacin may increase that risk. You may be more susceptible if you are elderly, Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.

 

  • Warfarin-Major

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicine. When these medicines are taken together it may cause you to bleed more easily. Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.

 

  • Aspirin-Moderate

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicine. Levofloxacin may rarely cause central nervous system side effects such as tremors, involuntary muscle movements, anxiety, confusion, depression, hallucinations or seizures, and combining it with other medications that can also affect the central nervous system such as aspirin may increase that risk. Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.

 

  • Naproxen-Moderate

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicine. Levofloxacin may rarely cause central nervous system side effects such as tremors, involuntary muscle movements, anxiety, confusion, depression, hallucinations or seizures, and combining it with other medications that can also affect the central nervous system such as naproxen may increase that risk. Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.

 

Alcohol interactions:

 

Consumption of alcohol is not recommended while receiving this medicine as it may cause interactions and lead to serious adverse effects and may worsen the health condition.

 

Food interactions:

  1. This medicine can be taken with or without food.  
  2. The use of levofloxacin should be avoided in patients who have experienced serious adverse reactions in the past when using quinolone or fluoroquinolone containing products.
  3. Seek immediate medical care if you experience any unusual side effects such as Fever, Stomach cramps or pain, skin rash, itching, or redness
  4. The use of this medicine may be associated with an increased risk of kidney dysfunction

Missed dose instructions:

 

Take this medicine as soon as you remember. However if it is almost the time for your next dose skip the dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double dose to make up for the missed dose.

 

Over dose Instructions:

 

Seek emergency treatment or contact your physician in case if you experience any unusual signs and symptoms during the treatment with this medicine.
