What is this used for:

When to not take this medicine:

• Hypersensitivity/Known Allergy to Glimepiride
• Liver disease
• Kidney disease
• Metabolic acidosis 

How should I take the medicine?

Take this medicine with an adequate amount of water as directed by the physician. Do not take 

this medicine in small or larger amounts than recommended.

How this medicine works:

This medicine lowers the blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes by stimulating the release of insulin and increasing the sensitivity towards insulin.

Pregnancy warning: Category C.

Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.

Lactation warning:

Use of this medicine is not recommended for lactating and breastfeeding mothers unless absolutely necessary. Inform your doctor about the use of this medicine. All the risks and benefits should be discussed with the doctor before taking this medicine.

Renal dose adjustments:

Care must be taken for individuals with kidney disease while taking this medicine. Please discuss appropriate dose adjustments with your doctor. Your doctor may also prescribe a suitable alternative on the basis of creatinine clearance values.

Hepatic dose adjustments:

Care must be taken for individuals with liver disease while taking this medicine. Please discuss appropriate dose adjustments with your doctor. Your doctor may also prescribe a suitable alternative.

Drug interactions:

• Gatifloxacin-Major

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicine. When these medicines are taken together it may affect the blood glucose levels. Hence, this medicine should not be used in the patient with diabetes. In severe cases of low blood glucose levels, it may lead to coma and sometimes death. Inform your doctor on priority when you experience any unusual signs and symptoms. Appropriate dose adjustments or suitable alternatives may be considered based on your condition.

• Bexarotene-Major

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicine. When these medicines are taken together there may be an increased risk of inflammation of the organ-pancreas.  Inform your doctor on priority when you experience any unusual signs and symptoms. Appropriate dose adjustments or suitable alternatives may be considered based on your condition.

• Ciprofloxacin-Moderate

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicine. When these medicines are taken together it may affect the blood glucose levels either low blood sugar levels or high in blood glucose levels. This may result in coma and sometimes death. This is especially noticed in elderly patients or patients known to kidney dysfunction. Inform your doctor on priority when you experience any unusual signs and symptoms like nausea, vomiting, weakness, irregular heartbeat, confusion, drowsiness, hunger, etc. Appropriate dose adjustments or suitable alternatives may be considered based on your condition.

• Clarithromycin-Moderate 

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicine. When these medicines are taken together, this may result in a decrease in the blood sugar levels. Inform your doctor on priority when you experience any unusual signs and symptoms like confusion, tremors, nausea, weakness, hunger, irregular heartbeat, etc. Appropriate dose adjustments or suitable alternatives may be considered based on your condition.

Alcohol interactions:

Consumption of alcohol is not recommended while taking this medicine as it may cause interactions and lead to serious adverse effects and may worsen the health condition.

1. This medicine can be taken with food. This will lower the chances of stomach complaints.
2. This medicine is not recommended to use in children below 18 years of age without your doctor’s advice.
3. Lactic Acidosis- This medicine may cause Lactic acidosis i.e. formation of acid in the blood which may lead to death. If you notice any unusual signs then immediately report to your doctor.
4. Care must be taken for the use of this medicine in individuals like Vitamin B12 deficiency, Stressful conditions like fever, surgery or accidents, etc.
5. Seek emergency medical help if you experience any of the side effects like blistering or peeling of the skin, itching, swelling of the eyes, face, lip, mouth, difficulty in swallowing, hoarseness, rash on cheeks or arms, etc.
6. It is recommended to check your blood glucose levels regularly.

Missed dose instructions:

Take this medicine as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost the for your next dose skip the dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double dose to make up for the missed dose.

Seek emergency treatment or contact your physician in case if you experience any unusual signs and symptoms during the treatment with this medicine.

Store the medicine in a cool and dry place. Keep the medicine away from the reach of the children
