What is this used for:

  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis
  • Otitis media caused by Herophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis and S. pyogenes
  • Pharyngitis and tonsillitis caused by S. pyogenes
  • Acute bronchitis and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Herophilus influenzae

 

 When to not take this medicine:

  • Hypersensitivity or Allergy towards Cefpodoxime
  • Liver diseases
  • Kidney disease
  • Diarrhea

 

How should i take the medicine:

Take this medicine with an adequate amount of water as directed by the physician. Do not take this medicine in small or larger amounts than recommended.

 

How this medicine works:

This medicine prevents the growth of bacterial infections by preventing vital protein synthesis processes within the bacterial cells.

Care must be taken for individuals with kidney disease while taking this medicine. Please discuss appropriate dose adjustments with your doctor. Your doctor may also prescribe a suitable alternative on the basis of creatinine clearance values.

 

Hepatic dose adjustments:

Care must be taken for individuals with liver disease while taking this medicine. Please discuss appropriate dose adjustments with your doctor. Your doctor may also prescribe a suitable alternative.

 

Drug interactions:

  • BCG-Major

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicine. When these medicines are taken together Cefpoxodime may reduce the anti-tumor activity of BCG in the bladder. To ensure adequate response to your cancer treatment, you should not receive BCG until after you complete your antibiotic therapy. Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.

 

  • Cholera vaccine-Moderate

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicine. When these medicines are taken together it increases the risk of kidney damage. Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.

 

  • Gentamicin-Moderate

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicine. When these medicines are taken together it increases the risk of kidney damage. Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.

 

  • Typhoid vaccine-Moderate

Inform your doctor about the use of either medicine. When these medicines are taken together Cefpoxodime can reduce the activity of the vaccine. Appropriate dose adjustments may be done, or suitable alternate medicine may be considered based on the condition.

 

Alcohol interactions:

Consumption of alcohol is not recommended while receiving this medicine as it may cause interactions and lead to serious adverse effects and may worsen the health condition.

Expert Advice: 

  • This medicine can be taken with or without food.  
  • Atrophic gastritis has been noted with long-term use of this medicine.
  • Seek immediate medical care if you experience any unusual side effects such as Muscle twitching, Coughing up blood, General body swelling, Paralysis
  • The use of this medicine may be associated with an increased risk of Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea. Inform your doctor immediately in case you have watery stools.

 

Missed dose instructions: 

Take this medicine as soon as you remember. However if it is almost the time for your next dose skip the dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double dose to make up for the missed dose.

 

Over dose Instructions:

Seek emergency treatment or contact your physician in case if you experience any unusual signs and symptoms during the treatment with this medicine.
