Studies Show Vitamin D Supplementation Can Reduce The Risk Of Colorectal Cancer.

In the latest study released by the Journal of National Cancer Institute, it shows that people with satisfactory levels of vitamin D in their blood have a significantly reduced risk of colon and colorectal cancer. The study was conducted by a group of international researchers including some head research executives from the American Cancer Society.
The research was conducted by combining the data from about 17 long-term observational studies based on colorectal cancer. The data is said to be collected from about 12,800 individuals, these individuals were tested for their vitamin D levels during the beginning of the research and a steady track was kept on the rise and fall of these levels. Among the test group, people who developed colorectal cancer during the period of research was categorised into a different category.

Good news for all diabetics out there! Once again, the medical science is in your favor. According to a recent report published in the journal ‘Cell’, it is found that Vitamin D supplement may help in tackling Diabetes and other chronic diseases, including cancer.
Diabetes is a long-term disease caused when glucose (sugar) present in the blood rises higher than its normal level. This condition is called Hyperglycemia. Glucose is a type of sugar present in the body and insulin (secreted by the pancreas) is a hormone that handles the glucose level.
It is estimated that there are around 415 million people in the world who are living with Diabetes. It means that 1 in 11 of the world’s population is diagnosed with chronic diabetes while 46% of the total population remains undiagnosed. This result is expected to rise to 642 million by 2040.
What Causes Diabetes?
The hormone ‘Insulin’ is produced by the pancreas which helps cells of the body to take in blood sugar (glucose) and convert it into energy. In Type 2 diabetes, either the sufficient insulin is not produced by the pancreas or there’s an incapability of the cells to use insulin. It is also caused due to a genetic factor and overweight.
Beta cells, present in the pancreas is responsible for producing, storing and releasing Insulin. When we eat, the blood sugar rises. Beta cells respond quickly to the rise of blood sugar concentration and trigger Insulin in the blood, simultaneously producing more in the pancreas.
Diabetes is caused due to the dysfunction of beta cells or beta cells failure that result in the ‘Insulin Resistance’ condition by the cells. There are 2 types of Diabetes: In Type 1 Diabetes, the autoimmune system of the body destroys the beta cells making it incapable to secrete Insulin. In Type 2 Diabetes, Insulin from the pancreas is produced but the cells resist to obey the instructions of the Insulin and convert the glucose into energy. In both the conditions, the glucose level of the blood hikes, causing Diabetes.

Researchers of the Salk Institute published a report based on the new treatment for Diabetes. This report was published in the journal ‘Cell’ on May 10th, 2018. The study reflects the idea that Vitamin D helps in protecting the Beta cells so that it can uninterruptedly release the insulin. As Beta cells are responsible for making, storing and secreting Insulin, any dysfunction in its functionality can imbalance the level of glucose in the blood. This can lead to a fatal condition and can even cause the death of a person. Luckily, when they experimented in treating the damaged beta cells, Vitamin D was found to be very effective.
The research was carried out by the unexpected source (Vitamin D) on cells and mouse models with diabetes. It was found that Vitamin D interacts with the genes and reduces inflammation (as diabetes is caused by inflammation). This experiment has opened the door to a new insight that how gene regulation can be helpful in the treatment of other chronic diseases, Cancer being on the top list.
Ronald Evans, a senior Author at Howard Hughes Medical Institute says that by this experiment, they were able to identify that Vitamin D receptors play an important role of a modulator in reducing inflammation and protecting Beta cells from dying.
The experiment was carried out by using insulin-producing Beta cells which were made from embryonic stem cells (a stem cell derived from the inner cells of embryos during an early developmental stage). A screening test was done to look for the compounds that can enhance the survival rate of the Beta cells and it was found that when Vitamin D receptors were activated, Beta cells survival rate is improved. This experiment has identified the main pathway that can activate Vitamin D receptors and improve the survival rate of the Beta cells.
But the question is, how Vitamin D helps Beta cells? The investigators found that it has something to do with the transcription process of the gene. During the transcription process of the gene (a process in which DNA is copied to RNA), Vitamin D enhances the gene tendency to a higher level so that it can survive in many critical conditions. This test was carried again on a mouse model with diabetes and the result was found to be unexpected. The glucose level in animals sinks to a normal level when Vitamin D was introduced.
Author Zong Wei, a research associate in Salk’s Laboratory says that this experiment was initiated when they started looking for the effect of Vitamin D on beta cells. The Epidemiological study suggested that high level of Vitamin D concentration in the body is related to the normal glucose level in the body, thus a low risk of diabetes. Though it was examined that Vitamin D plays a crucial role in the Beta cells protection, the theory was not yet cleared as it is hard to believe that Vitamin D alone can safeguard Beta cells.
One of the Salk’s senior staff scientist, Michael Downes says that when Vitamin D receptors are activated, it provokes the gene anti-inflammatory function that ultimately, helps in the survival of the cells in any critical conditions.

Vitamin D Deficiency Can Cause Diabetes in Women:

In 2017, ASSOCHAM published a study report stating that 8 out of 10 women in New Delhi suffer from Vitamin D deficiency and on top of that vitamin D deficiency is directly linked to abdominal obesity. Taking this worrying research forward, researchers from AIIMS, Fortis C-DOC, Diabetes Foundation of India, and NDOCF unearthed the relationship between diabetes and Vitamin D deficiency.
In a study comprising of nearly 800 women from age groups between 20 years to 60 years, the study established that nearly 70% women were Vitamin D deficient. Only 5.5% women were Vitamin D sufficient, while the rest fell in the Vitamin D insufficient category. However, that was not the entire picture. The studies also confirmed of an inverse relationship between vitamin D levels and blood sugar levels.
The lower the vitamin D levels, the higher the blood sugar levels. It has been conjectured that this could be related to the fact that vitamin D deficiency helps the function of the pancreas, which secrete the blood sugar absorbing insulin.
Some of the causes of this high incidence of vitamin D deficiency in women in India can be contributed to the fact that most women in India spend a lot of time indoors, wear clothes that completely cover them, apart from liberally applying sunscreen which prevents the skin from absorbing sunlight.
